Having experienced total panic when my horse Flossie and I parted company on a lone hack and she decided she'd not hang around waiting to be eaten by an invisable lion and made her way home alone - I have now attached a luggage label to her saddle which has my name and address and contact details on it and Flossies details and the name of our vet to. Its cheap and simple.
SUMMERTIME COOLERS
We all like a drink on a long hack and I hate drinking warm drinks so I buy small cartons of juice and freeze them overnight, then I pop them in my bumbag with my other nibbles, by lunchtime its melted and has kept my other nibbles cold, do pop into a bag though as water will run of as thawing accurs.
TACK CLEANING
Half a bar of belvoir saddle soap
half a pint of milk
one empty container
Method
Put milk in a saucepan
Cut the saddle soap
Gently heat the milk (do not boil) until the saddle soap has melted - stirring frequently
Allow to cool slightly and then pour into the container - leave in the fridge or in a cool place overnight until set.
Put the lid on the container once set
Your saddle soap will be the right consistancy next time you need it (no need for damp sponges) and you only need to use it sparingly so it will last for ages, no need to store in fridge, a cool place is fine but do keep the lid on!
(why not try using an old sock (not woollen)for tack cleaning duties? just slip it over your hand like a mitten and then you can clean both sides of your tack at the same time!!
Thanks Aly, we will give these a go I'm sure
